Willy Brandt Bio, Peace prize winner 
Willy Brandt is the adopted name of Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm. He was born in December 1913 to an unwed Lubeck shopgirl. He was brought up by his maternal Grandfather. He joined the German socialist party as a teenager. In 1945/46 he worked as a correspondent in Germany for Scandinavian newspapers and then became press officer at the Norwegian Mission in Berlin. He was a often called a traitor because he fled Germany during the reign of the nazis. In 1949 he was elected into the first parliament of the post war West Germany. He proved himself to be a really important part of the group. He was then chose to be a candidate to run for governor of West Berlin. He escaped to Norway to escape the nazis. He was arrested in Norway for occupying German forces. He was not identified because he wore a Norwegian uniform. He escaped to Sweden. Then he returned to Germany. He was then promoted to Chancellor. His assistant was thought to have been a spy for east Germany. Brandt resigned on May 17, 1974. After his term as Chancellor, he remained chairmen of the SPD, Brandt was also the head of Socialist International from 1976-1992. He got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971.
