Linus Pauling was a chemist who became famous because of controversy surrounding his vitamin C research. He wrote a book about how vitamin C can prevent the common cold in 1970. In it he proposed that using big doses of vitamin C would prevent the common cold. He took 3 grams of vitamin C a day himself. This book was highly rated by the public, but not the medical establishment. They thought that vitamin C would not help prevent the common cold.

In 1971 Pauling started collaborating with a cancer surgeon on a cancer cure from vitamin C. Mayo Clinic tested his studies to see if they were valid, they said that it was not a valid study. Later in 1990, multiple studies were done which supported his findings. Now many cold and cancer medications contain vitamin C.
